Soldano is a Los Angeles amp company started by Mike Soldano, who began by modifying and repairing amps for touring players. His first production head, the SLO-100 Super Lead Overdrive, became a reference for high-gain lead tone. Many later designs borrow its preamp layout.
Mercuriall Audio says SUN-100 Amp is inspired by the SLO-100. That is confirmed by the developer, and the same model also appears in Mercuriall's desktop software.
The SLO-100 has a clean channel and an overdrive channel, and the overdrive is the famous one. It stacks several gain stages so it can reach heavy saturation, yet it keeps each note distinct when you play chords or fast lines. The low end stays tight and the top is smooth rather than fizzy.
Guitarists care because it sits well in a band. It gives lead lines a long, singing sustain and gives rhythm parts a solid, focused crunch without turning to mush. It also responds to picking strength, so you can play quieter for less gain without touching the amp.
For players coming from lower-gain amps, it is easy to set the gain too high. The SLO-100 does not need much before it is fully saturated, and backing off gives a clearer, more modern rock tone.
Bass players can use it in a parallel path for an aggressive top layer over a clean low end, a common trick in heavier bands. Keep the guitar amp's bass control low if you do.
Try SUN-100 Amp with the gain around one third and the presence near noon. Pair it with a closed-back 4x12 or 2x12 cab block for a tight result.
