ENGL is a German amp maker founded by Edmund Engl. It built its name on precise, tight high-gain heads aimed at heavy music, and its amps are common in European metal studios. The Powerball, with its several gain channels, is one of its best-known designs.
Nembrini Audio says Hardball is based on the Powerball II, the four-channel version of that head. forward audio says faIR ENG 212 is based on the E212VH, a closed-back 2x12 loaded with Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. Both are confirmed by the developers.
The same E212VH also appears in forward audio's free faIR Post Grunge, blended with a Mesa/Boogie 4x12 and a Marshall 1960A. That is confirmed too.
The ENGL voice is tight and focused. The low end stays firm even with a lot of gain, and the attack is sharp, which helps fast picking and low tunings stay clear. Compared with a Rectifier it tends to sound more controlled and less loose in the bottom. Compared with a Marshall it has more gain and less raw upper-mid bite.
The closed-back 2x12 suits this kind of amp because it keeps the low end punchy without the size of a 4x12. It also works as a smaller-sounding cab for other high-gain blocks.
Bass players can use these blocks too, usually in parallel with a clean bass path. A high-gain guitar amp on bass can lose the low end, so keep that on the clean side.
Try Hardball into faIR ENG 212 first. Start with a lower gain channel and back off the bass knob before you add more drive.
