Avalon Design is a California maker of high-end studio gear. Its Class A preamps and channel strips are found in many recording studios. The U5 is its compact direct box and preamp for instruments, and it is a common choice for recording bass straight into a desk.
Joe Calderone Audio describes Arcadia U7 as a model of a well-known Class A studio DI, keeping the original's six tone curves and adding a seventh of its own. We mark the U5 link as confirmed.
The U5 is not an amp and does not add drive. Instead it gives a clean, wide and slightly polished signal with plenty of headroom. Its stepped boost adds level and some body. The tone selector chooses between preset EQ curves, from subtle low lift to brighter or more scooped shapes.
That matters for bass because a good DI is often the core of a recorded bass sound. Engineers frequently record a DI alongside an amp and blend the two, using the DI for clean low end and definition. Many players also use a DI like this as their whole live sound when the venue has a good PA.
On the Anagram, Arcadia U7 works well as a final shaping stage after a drive block, or as a clean parallel path next to an amp block. It adds weight and polish without changing the character of what comes before it.
Try Arcadia U7 on its own first, with the boost at a low step, and switch through the tone curves while you play to hear what each one does.
